FnB to Host Yogurt Culture Author

A few years ago, Silicon Valley-based cookbook author and food writer Cheryl Sternman Rule was passing through Phoenix and she asked me where she should eat. She only had one night. I wanted to recommend something that she would absolutely love. You have to know a little about Cheryl to understand why I sent her where I did.

Cheryl’s first cookbook is called “Ripe.” The book is organized by color, featuring fruits and vegetables. [Side note… I now occasionally work with Paulette Phlipot, the photographer for “Ripe” … it’s a small world.]

We have so many great restaurants in town, but ultimately I felt FnB Restaurant in Scottsdale would be a place that Cheryl would totally get. This was years before I became friends with the chef/co-owner of FnB, Charleen Badman.

Turns out, my hunch was correct. The match was a hit, and next Saturday, November 7, Cheryl is flying in to do a book signing/luncheon at FnB with her newest book, “Yogurt Culture.”

I bought Yogurt Culture this summer and have played around with several recipes. One of my favorite things from the book is homemade labneh, and if you’ve ever eaten at FnB, you know Charleen is a huge fan of this salty, thickened Middle Eastern-style yogurt cheese, too. I also love the easy baked salmon recipe, slathered in mustardy yogurt and topped with browned, buttered bread crumbs, so I was thrilled to see that is one of the recipes Charleen is making for the luncheon.

Here’s the whole menu, which… bonus… is going to be paired with wines from Dos Cabezas WineWorks. In fact, Todd & Kelly Bostock will be at the luncheon to talk about why they picked which wines to serve.

little cheddar | chive | cornmeal pancakes

mushroom crostini | yoghurt | lemon | thyme

carrot cumin soup | cumin seed oil

Dos Cabezas Meskeoli

oven-baked, tarragon scented salmon | spigariello

Dos Cabezas El Campo Blanco

dry-rubbed skirt steak | caramelized onion yoghurt | creamed corn

Dos Cabezas Aguileon

labneh dimpled brownie tart | labneh ice cream

*Luncheon includes a signed copy of “Yogurt Culture.”

If you’re in town, I hope you’ll come. Cheryl, besides being an award-winning writer, is funny and charming and humble. She has written for Sunset Magazine, Cooking Light, and Vegetarian Times to name only a few. Her blog, 5 Second Rule, won the 2012 Best Culinary Blog from the prestigious International Association of Culinary Professionals (IACP), and Saveur Magazine readers named it “Best Writing Blog” in 2014. The lady has serious writing and cooking chops.

Gwen, thank you so much for spreading the word (and making this happen). Please tell me I’ll get to see you at the luncheon, or else let’s make SURE to meet up during my (very short) visit!
