I’m going to take a minute to brag, so please forgive me.
I submitted a feature article I wrote for PHOENIX Magazine in the 2015 Arizona Press Club awards, food and beverage writing category … and I won 2nd place!
It’s the first time I’ve entered and I’m extremely honored I placed at all. The story, “Saintly Stockers,” was a beast at 4,000+ words, covering the Mormon practice of food storage, and how it isn’t just for Mormons anymore.

Phoenix resident Andra Riegel has enough food stored to feed her and her husband – and any number of her seven grown children who pop in from time to time – for a full year.

So I bet you are wondering who won 1st place. That would be my friend and former colleague, Dominic Armato, the dining critic for The Arizona Republic. He took 1st AND 3rd place. I’d grouse but I’m really proud of him and his 1st place story about the Hana Egg is oh so deserving.
