3SummerSmoothies

Gourmet smoothies are my thing — something I do for the pure joy of creating and drinking. And sharing, of course.

Since June of 2010, I have made 281 gourmet smoothies and shared them through social media. If you follow me on Twitter (@chefgwen) you’ll see my smoothie creations on Wednesday of every week. I also post them on Pen & Fork’s Facebook page, and more recently on Pinterest and Instagram.

The story of how and why I started making and sharing my gourmet smoothies is documented in this Edible Phoenix story, along with four more recipes for fall smoothies.

My spice cabinet and pantry, along with whatever fruit is in season, inspire me create smoothies you might not find in a typical smoothie shop. For me, it’s all about the taste. You won’t find ice in my smoothies. I think ice dilutes the flavor. As a result, some of my smoothies are thinner than others. I’m OK with that.

You also won’t find kale or spinach in my smoothies, although there’s nothing wrong with that. Maybe I’ll try that some day. Or maybe not.

While I contemplate that, here are three summer smoothies that take advantage of what’s in season now — watermelon, cherries and peaches. I love all three of these flavor bombs. Hope you like them, too.

If you want more gourmet smoothie inspiration, take a look at my Flickr stream, where I document each week’s smoothie.

Watermelon + Ginger + 5-Spice

Watermelon+Ginger+5-Spice2

Makes just shy of 3 cups, about 2 servings

Fantastic — one of my favorites. It’s sweet, spicy, exotic and refreshing all at once.

Ingredients:
1-1/4 cups low fat vanilla yogurt
12 ounces (~2 cups) cubed, seeded watermelon
1 teaspoon grated ginger
1/4 teaspoon Chinese 5-spice powder

Method:
Place all ingredients in a blender in the order listed and puree until smooth.

Note: This is a thin smoothie because of the water-heavy watermelon. You can freeze the watermelon but it is still a thin smoothie, certainly compared to other fruits.

Cherry+Tarragon+Lemon

Cherry + Tarragon + Lemon

Makes just shy of 3 cups, about 2 servings

The fuchsia color on this smoothie is stunning…but drink up because it will fade quickly. I love the slight licorice flavor the tarragon imparts, and the lemon brightens up the sweet cherry flavor.

Ingredients:
1-1/4 cups low fat vanilla yogurt
12 ounces (~2 cups) pitted fresh Bing cherries
1 tablespoon chopped fresh tarragon leaves
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1 teaspoon lemon juice

Method:
Place all ingredients in a blender in the order listed and puree until smooth.

Peach + Basil + Cinnamon

Peach+Basil+Cinnamon

Makes 3 cups, about 2 servings

I love this herbal, warm-spiced peach smoothie, especially when the peaches are super ripe. Chiffonade is just a fancy term for chopping a leafy green by rolling it into a cigar shape and then slicing it crosswise into ribbons.

Ingredients:
1-1/4 cups low fat vanilla yogurt
13-15 ounces whole peaches, sliced (about 3 medium size)
2 tablespoons basil chiffonade
1 tablespoon honey
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Method:
Place all ingredients in a blender in the order listed and puree until smooth.
